While it took me awhile to warm up to, APOCALYPSE LAW proved to be a far better experience than I expected. With the scenes so tightly interwoven around so few characters, and their struggles to survive, the book has an intense quality to it unlike anything else I've read of late. But the author draws the reader into the setting to the point where you feel the desperation, the heartache and frustration - and sometimes the lack of understanding. I'm not quite certain I get point of the experienced in their particular location, as it seems extremely unlikely - but perhaps it will be explained in future volumes. Other than that, I could find no fault with the premises, the scene, or he characters presented. Each seemed to be fully fleshed out, and behaved accordingly. The author, John Grit, was previously unknown to me - though I see from his Amazon page he has a fair body of work, including a part 5 due out Spring of 2014 (he hopes). With any luck I'll have complete 2& 3 just in time to move on to part 5, assuming what follows is nearly as captivating as book 1.

Apocalypse Law John Grit 9781461015802 Books Reviews
Being the first book in the series, the characters were built very well and I could completely relate to the father trying to teach and keep his son alive. Everything the father does makes sense and has purpose, things you would definately do in this type of situation. The story was fast paced and filled with a lot of detail. You can tell the writer spent a lot of time researching military tactics and thinking about each scene he wrote because as a military guy, this book was spot on. The relationship between the boy and father set the dynamics of the story, but don't be fooled, there is plenty of action and some definate twist and turns. Highly recommended for any military man/woman, prepper, or apocalypse type book enthusiast.
The book is well written, the only reason I gave it 4 stars is that the author wrote the book with a layman in mind. By this I mean, he assumes whoever reads this is not a zombie prepper like me. Example, he tells his Son to go get the walkie talkies, and then explains, "these are the walkie talkie his wife bought years ago, for when he goes hunting". The author tries to explain why the survivalists have the items they have. And for those of us that read these books, it is really not necessary. I hope this makes sense, it does not diminish from the book, but it is OK if I dont know the back story on the particular item he has saved for the apocalypse.Still a good read ! Perfect for a few hour plane ride.
Much has been made already about the poor copyediting and stilted writing contained in this book, so I won't pile on. I'll just say that I agree -- those two issues plague what could have been a better-than-average work. However, even if Apocalypse Law had been professionally copyedited and the writer graduated to a more advanced/nuanced style, the story and characters would still lack depth and development. I love this subject matter but this work is as one-dimensional as it gets. Perhaps Mr. Grit's writing will improve over time, but I'll have to read a lot of positive reviews before I try another of his books. I didn't hate the book, hence the three-star rating... I didn't like it as much as I wanted to, either.
I just finished Apocalypse Law 3 kindle version and can't wait for book 4 and hopefully many more. The stories and main characters are believable even if a bit on the heroic side and the action is practically non stop with plenty of educational bits thrown in from tactical ideas to common sense prepping. I noticed a lot of typos but no way did they stand in the way of enjoying the books. I can't explain it but typos in some books just drive me up a wall but if the story is strong enough maybe I focus more and "auto correct" the mispelled words. but back to the books. The main character's speech is a bit stiff as mentioned in other reviews but I figure it's just his style kind of like a Rambo type and he's always very deliberate in his actions and speech so that didn't bother me. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes this genre.
At first I wasn't sure if this book was for me but as I continued reading it proved to me a great book. Nate faces many challenges and doesn't give up. There was a plague that wiped out ninety-five percent of the population including his wife and daughter, leaving him to raise his thirteen year old son by himself, and still he continues on. No law, people starving, desperate men that will take what they want from you no matter what. Nate doesn't give up still, he continues on and in the process he can still show kindness to others. I would recommend this book to everyone, a lot can be learned from it.
This is a very interesting and well crafted story about a father living on a farm with his 13 year old son during a pandemic that has killed 90% of the population. The main character's wife has just died along with his daughter from this deadly outbreak and he, along with his surviving son, must deal with this heartbreak as society breaks down around them. The son is having difficulties dealing with TEOTWAWKI and his mother and sister dying at the same time. So the father must deal with his son's melancholy along with people coming to raid the farm. The father is soon getting help from a mysterious stranger who has been sneaking into their chicken coop at night to take eggs. The story is very interesting and written with great detail that really brings the story alive. It does have a few of the cliches of this genre and those are the father is an former army ranger and the next door neighbor has the fully stocked end of the world bunker. But the author uses them in such a way that this does not come off as a Rambo on the prowl book, but more of a father trying to protect his son in a world gone mad. This is fairly short book but it was full of the drama and action you want from a story. When I was trying to decide if this was a four or five star book, the thing that made me give it five stars was I could not think of anything that was really wrong with the book. There were no awkward dialogue sequences, people doing thing out of character, or unbelievable event and I didn't find myself skimming ahead.
